Philadelphia’s art museums comprise one of the largest collections of art, including Impressionist art, in the country. The city also has one of the largest collections of outdoor and mural art in the world, as well as a variety of galleries in which to browse and shop. The following list includes Philadelphia’s top art museums and collections.
Center City Philadelphia
Philadelphia Museum of Art
The collection is housed in a magnificent neoclassical building with a breathtaking view of the city skyline. Spanning more than 2,000 years, it includes masterpieces of painting, sculpture, print, drawing and decorative art displayed with a wide-range of furniture, silver, glass, architectural elements and entire rooms furnished from historic houses.
Rodin Museum
This museum houses the largest collection of Rodin sculptures and drawings outside of Paris, including “The Thinker,” “The Burghers of Calais” and the “Gates of Hell.”
Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts
America’s first art museum and art school is housed in a building that is a National Historic Landmark and a Philadelphia architectural treasure. The Academy’s renowned collection of American paintings and sculpture spans three centuries and includes works by great American artists including Benjamin West, Charles Willson Peale, Thomas Eakins, Mary Cassatt and Georgia O’Keefe.
University of Pennsylvania’s Institute of Contemporary Art
Philadelphia’s premier contemporary art museum is known for exhibiting artists before they become famous, such as Robert Mapplethorpe and Andy Warhol. Changing exhibits showcase new and emerging artists.
Fabric Workshop and Museum
This is the only museum in the country dedicated to traditional and experimental art in fabric and other materials. Visitors can view gallery exhibitions and watch artists’ works-in-progress and fabric-making techniques.
Woodmere Art Museum
Historic cobblestoned Chestnut Hill is a spectacular setting for this 19th-century stone mansion with an adjoining carriage house on six acres. The museum showcases the art and artists of the Philadelphia area, past and present.
Philadelphia’s Art Galleries
Art galleries abound throughout Center City Philadelphia including the Rittenhouse Row district, Washington Square and the Old City district, offering a variety of works, from traditional to contemporary.
Old City Arts Association
There are more than 40 art galleries and showrooms in the Old City district where the artworks are for sale. From Front Street to 4th Street and from Walnut Street to Vine Street, the galleries are open extended evening hours on the first Friday of every month, with some galleries featuring special exhibitions. A popular event, “First Friday,” attracts many locals and visitors to Old City’s galleries and restaurants.
Philadelphia’s Outdoor Art
Philadelphia has one of the largest concentrations of outdoor art in the country, including statues and sculptures. Among those are Robert Indiana’s famous “Love” sculpture at 15th and John F. Kennedy Boulevard and Claes Oldenburg’s giant “Clothespin,” which can be seen near City Hall. Philadelphia also has one of the largest collections of outdoor mural art anywhere in the world. Other displays of public art can be seen inside the city’s buildings, including “The Dream Garden” mural, a magnificent collaboration of Tiffany and Maxfield Parrish located in the lobby of the Curtis Center (former home of the Saturday Evening Post).
Philadelphia’s Countryside
The Barnes Foundation
The Barnes Foundation, located in nearby Merion, houses one of the world’s finest private collections of early French modern and post-Impressionist paintings. The world-famous collection contains 180 works by Renoir, 69 by Cézanne, 60 by Matisse, and works by Manet, Monet, Modigliani, Picasso and many others.
A shuttle service is available to The Barnes Foundation from the Adam’s Mark Hotel. The shuttle is for groups only and reservations must be made 30 days in advance. Contact The Barnes at 610-664-5191 for additional information and group reservations. The museum is open Friday-Sunday from September through June and Wednesday–Friday in July and August. Admission to the Gallery is by advanced reservation only.
Brandywine River Museum
Showcasing art in a 19th-century grist mill, this museum, located in the Brandywine Valley, is internationally known for its unparalleled collection of works by three generations of Wyeths, and for its fine collection of American illustrations and still-life and landscape paintings.
James A. Michener Art Museum
Located in Bucks County and named for the famous author, who lived in the area, the museum includes works by 19th- and 20th-century artists.
Philadelphia was recently designated by Destinations magazine as “one of the hottest up and coming destinations for groups,” and ranked as one the top 10 motorcoach destinations of the past decade” by Byways magazine.
