Philadelphia Phillies Fun Facts

July 17, 1976, Mike Schmidt hits four home runs as the Phillies defeat the Chicago Cubs 18-16, at Wrigley Field. Schmidt hits his first homer off Rick Reuschel and his fourth homer off Rick's brother, Paul.

Sept. 20 1964, the Phillies defeat the Dodgers, 3-2 in Los Angeles and fly home with a 6-1/2 game lead only 12 games remaining in the season. They lose the next 10 games, and the St. Louis Cardinals win the pennant.

September 20, 1992, in a game against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Three Rivers Stadium, Phillies second baseman Mickey Morandini turns the first unassisted triple play in the National League since 1927. With Andy Van Slyke on second and Barry Bonds on first, the Pirates' Jeff King hits a line drive straight up the middle. Morandini catches it, steps on second to double up Van Slyke and then tags Barry Bonds.

October 1, 1970, the Phillies win their last game played at Connie Mack Stadium, defeating the Montreal Expos, 2-1, in 10 innings. Upon entering the gates, fans are given wooded slats souvenirs which they use to create a terrifying din by beating the stadium in unison. Others rip out seats as additional souvenirs; many start fights. When the game finally ends, fans run amok on the field.

October 21, 1980, for the first time in history, the Phillies are World Champions. Steve allows four hits over seven innings and Tug McGraw pitches scoreless relief as the Phillies defeat the Kansas City Royals in the sixth and Final World Series game.

October 23, 1910, Philadelphia's first World Series victory: in the eighth inning of the fifth game, the Athletics score five runs to defeat the Chicago Cubs, 7-2.

June 23, 1971, Phillies right-hander Rick Wise pitches a no-hit game against the Cincinnati Reds, hitting two home runs and becoming the fourth Phillie to pitch a no-hitter - and the only one to do it wearing glasses.
