Rashid Ali, drums -- Moved to NY and the free Jazz scene with Pharaoh Sanders, Don Cherry, and later Sun Ra.
Michael Brecker, tenor saxophone, and Randy Brecker, trumpet -- Beginning in rock and big bands, these brothers made their mark in small tight jazz-fusion ensembles.
Clifford Brown, trumpet, composer -- Gained respect as a soloist, band leader, and composer of classic jazz tunes.
Jimmy Bruno, guitar -- Faithful to hard-driving improvisation, free of effects, he remains a popular teacher and performer.
Stanley Clarke, electric and acoustic bass -- Brought classical bass training to rock, soul, and jazz-fusion groups.
Jonny Coles, trumpet -- Jazz soloist with Gil Evans, Charles Mingus, Ray Charles, Duke Ellington.
John Coltrane, tenor and soprano saxophone, composer -- Joined Dizzy Gillespie and Dennis Sandole; crested jazz improvisation on "Giant Steps" and "My Favorite Things."
Stan Getz, tenor saxophone, composer -- Famed for bossa nova treatment of "The Girl From Impanema " with Jaoa Giberto.
John "Dizzy" Gillespie, trumpet -- Raised near 12th and Bainbridge Streets, he created the bop school of improvisation.
Jimmy Heath, saxophone, flute -- Played with bop leaders Miles Davis, Gil Evans, and Chet Baker and in the Heath brothers band.
Percy Heath, bass -- Played with Thelonius Monk before founding the Modern Jazz Quartet.
Lee Morgan, trumpet -- Joined Dizzy Gillespie at age 18 and later worked with Art Blakey.
Gerry Mulligan, saxophone, composer -- West Catholic High School Graduate and key figure in creating the late 1950's "Cool School" the West Coast reaction to bebop.
Sun Ra, band leader, composer, keys -- Founded the Myth-Science Solar Orchestra at his home in Germantown.
Red Rodney, trumpet -- One of the first whites to play bebop.
Shirley Scott, organ, piano -- Helped forge organ combo sound.
Evelyn Simms, vocal -- Carries on tradition of Billie Holiday in this area.
Archie Shepp, saxophone -- Worked with John Coltrane; later a successful playwright. Today, he pursues jazz and drama.
McCoy Tyner, piano -- Played with the Coltrane quartet, then led his own groups and composes for larger ensembles.
