Philly's The Place For Summer's Hottest Eats


Newcomers With History, Fresh & Seasonal Flavors, Great Spots For Sips & Snacks

In the heat of summer, Philadelphia’s restaurant scene continues to sizzle. Trending right now are highly anticipated openings from seasoned chefs, quick-service stops for drinks and nibbles and new places to dine at the region’s recreational hubs. Meanwhile, the fresh and local options keep on coming. Whether it’s the reopening of a beloved Mexican-French bring-your-own-bottle (BYOB) spot or a brand new bar that serves free pizza, a school-themed bistro with local produce or a roving sausage truck, there are plenty of hot new culinary stars this season. This summer’s menu also features some big names: It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia stars Rob McElhenny and Kaitlin Olson opened their own bar in Old City, and renowned restaurateur Jose Garces readies the next addition to his Philadelphia restaurant empire. Here’s a look at this season’s culinary menu:

Seasoned Openings:

  • Once a hidden gem in the Great Northeast, just a short drive from Center City, Paloma’s creative kitchen melded Mexican and French flavors for a fine-dining experience.   • Philly Beer Week co-founder Bruce Nichols has teamed up with chef Jimmy Chiu of Museum Catering to open The HeadHouse, a craft-beer-centric pub named for the square it overlooks, featuring 20 taps, 100 bottled beers and internationally accented fare such as spicy pork carnitas, octopus takoyaki and Spanish mussels. 122 Lombard Street, (215) 625-0122, headhousephilly.com
  • The long-anticipated new restaurant from Marcie Turney and Valerie Safran (Lolita, Bindi, Grocery, Open House and Verde), Barbuzzo sits on the power couple’s 13th Street corridor of businesses and has been handsomely furnished with a salvaged wood and Italian marble interior.   • A collaboration between restaurateur and hotelier Edward Bianchini and chef David Cunningham,Tweed is Center City’s swanky new entry into the farm-to-table movement.   • With its existing locations in Fairmount and Manayunk, the ethos of Mugshots has always been local, organic and green.   • Craft beer lovers have a new destination in South Philly’s The Bottle Shop, where fridges full of bottled brews encircle a small dining room serving beer-friendly snacks and sandwiches. 1837 Passyunk Avenue, (215) 551-5551
  • It worked smashingly in New York City, so now the owners of Crocodile are trying it in Old City: a bar that serves a free slice of pizza for every beer purchased.   • Owned in part by It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia stars Rob McElhenny and Kaitlin Olson, Mac’s Tavern is a little bit of life imitating art in Old City. Quick Bites:

  • Longtime caterer Steve Poses returns to the restaurant fold with Frog Burger, his seasonal burger joint outside of The Franklin Institute science museum, open to both museum patrons and the general public. Highlights include the With Love Burger (beef patty nestled between grilled cheese sandwiches), carrot cake shakes and grilled corn with chili-lime butter.
